Celebrate International Women’s Day with an Intersectional Approach to Feminism

March 8th is marked with by the International Women's day. We close the month, March 31st, by celebrating the International Transgender Day of Visibility.

We invite our readers to embrace the intersectionality of being a woman, and how those intersections impact how a person identifying as a woman walks through life - even today.

When we think about the challenges women have overcome, let's remember that history has always had a skewed definition of the word "women". Historically, Black, Indigenous, Racialized, Transgender women and gender non-conforming people have been systematically erased from books when compiling monumental moments where human rights, civic rights, societal views were advanced.

Similarly, when we discuss issues such as gender-based violence, reproductive rights, access to safe and timely healthcare, and equity in the workplace, let's keep in mind that the intersections of someone's identities have huge consequences.

During the month when the term Feminism is shouted from every direction, let's consider what true feminism means and costs for so many of us.

Quand nous parlons des défis qu'ont surmontés les femmes, rappelons-nous que l'histoire a toujours eu une définition biaisée du mot "femme". Historiquement, les femmes noires, autochtones, racisées, transgenres, ainsi que les personnes de genre non-conforme ont été systématiquement effacé.e.s des livres compilant les moments monumentaux qui ont avancé les droits de la personnes, les droits civiques, et les perceptions sociales.

Durant un mois où le mot féminisme est lancé de toutes directions, prenons le temps de considérer ce que cela signifie réellement, et ce que cela nous coûte.
